Lookalike Competitions are a Sign that the World is Healing
A quick argument of hope before the day starts
Hello and good morning! I said my piece in a reel yesterday, which I will embed here:
But I think the TLDR of lookalike competitions is:
this is a pageant (a large-scale, spectacular theatrical production or procession acc 2 britannica)
pageants in their origins gave “lower class” women 1) an excuse to leave the home alone and exist in public 2) an excuse to present themselves to society and the marriage market (Here She Is by Friedman says more about this)
Gen Z grew up with social media, making us spend less time in public/with others (true)
Third spaces have collapsed with tech and the suburbanization of america (true, I think, but could use some recs for some sources)
SO
Gen Z is ready to be in public again
We don’t have third spaces, we’ve shifted then all online
We are using the internet to make an excuse to go outside together
Now we just need to figure out a way to bring back third spaces
Yay Gen Z!
Yay gen z indeed
I love this. I like this. I love it and I like it if you know what I mean...I think we have so much potential for the type of activities we do. It just needs to get the 'OK' from the public.
